How to increase the open time performance of Word or Excel files that have many linked files. (Word 2007/2010, Excel 2007/2010)

 

In Excel

File > Options > Trust Center >
External Content >

Check “Enable automatic update for all Workbook Links (not recommended)

Trusted Locations

Add C:\\Curt_Share (and any other trusted locations)

Protected View

Uncheck Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations
Note I also uncheck all of them and I only open documents from people/places I trust.

In Word 2010

File > Options > Trust Center >

Trusted Locations

Add C:\Curt_Share
Check Subfolders of this location are also trusted
(or any other trusted locations)

Protected View

Uncheck Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe locations
Note I also uncheck all of them and I only open documents from people/places I trust.

You can also speed up the opening by turning by making links update automatically. Only do this if you want the linked data to update every time you open it.

 

1) Open Microsoft Excel workbook.
2) Click the ‘Microsoft Office’ button on the top left.
3) Click the ‘Excel Options’ button. (The ‘Excel Options’ dialog box appears.)
4) From the left pane, click ‘Advanced’. (The ‘Advanced’ screen appears.)
5) From the ‘General’ group, clear the ‘Ask to update automatic links’ check box.
6) Click ‘OK’.
